Operating Department Practitioner

Overview

How would you like to become a skilled healthcare professional working with a team of surgeons, anaesthetists and theatre nurses? This degree course will see you become a practitioner able to provide high standards of compassionate care at each perioperative stage – from anaesthetic to surgery to recovery. Over half of your study time, will be spent gaining experience on clinical placement within an NHS Trust.

ODPs are required to apply theory to practice in a variety of clinical settings, supporting both patients and other healthcare professionals. The role has a wide remit with ODPs undertaking a variety of tasks, such as ensuring equipment is provided and working, the environment is clean, and patients are correctly prepared for clinical procedures.

Becoming an ODP, requires you as a student to be prepared to put in hard work and commitment to do both the studying and working on placement. You will have the opportunity to rotate around different specialities during the training programme.

Some qualities to possess if you’re looking at becoming an ODP :

• Good communication and organisational skills,
• A caring and supportive nature,
• Care when using technical equipment.

Throughout your course, we will be aiming to allocate you alongside 2 mentors, who will give you regular guidance and personalised feedback on your progress in theory and practice.
